The Committee submitted its report in 1988 and recommended the establishment of a State University. In response to their submission, a 15-member committee of distinguished academicians under the chairmanship of Professor J. A. Akinpelu was inaugurated to further deliberate on the matter. The committee again retained the earlier verdict of the necessity for a new University in the then Oyo State. Several other committees, notably that of the Archdeacon (Dr) E. O. Alayande also deliberated on the viability of an Oyo State University.

Then in October 1989, an inter-ministerial committee set up by the Governor, Col. Sasaenia Adedeji Oresanya under the Chairperson of Mrs. Lydia Oyewumi Abimbola the State Commissioner for Education by then, conclusively approved the idea and launched the Higher Education Development Appeal Fund of the University. A total Sum of N19m was realized in both cash and pledges from the launching ceremonies conducted in the State Capital and in the 42 Local Government Areas of the State. Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola who was the chief launcher, donate a total sum of N2.05 million.

On the 9th of February 1990, the Abimbola Administerial committee established a Technical Committee of distinguished Academicians chaired by Prof. (Chief) E. A. Tugbiyele to formulate the blue print for the infrastuctures and administration of the new University. The committee submitted its report, on 12th April 1990, to the Government who approved it immediately. On 13th March, 1990 the Federal Military Government had acceded to the State's request to set up the new University. Col. Oresanya later signed the Edict Establishing the University on 23rd April, 1990. He also announced on 2nd May, 1990 the Appointment of Professor Olusegun Ladimeji Oke, a distinguished Chemist and a Fellow of Academy of Science (FAS) as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University.

In addition, the names of the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Ojetunji Aboyade and other members of the first Governing Council were announced on 28 May 1990 and Col. Sasaenia Oresanya himself became the foundation Visitor to the University. Later Bashorun M.K.O. Abiola became the first Chancellor in January, 1991 with the approval of the succeeding visitor, Col. Abdulkarim Adisa. The first meeting of the University Governing Council was held on 7th June 1990, the first Senate meeting was convened on 13th February, 1991, the first Academic session began on 19th October 1990 with a total number of 436 candidates were offered admission to various courses in four faculties namely Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Management Sciences, and Pure and Applied Sciences.

The establishment of the College of Health Sciences was postponed for a year and later took effect in October 1991 with a student population of thirty (30). Arising from the creation of Osun State from the former Oyo State, the name of the University was changed from Oyo State University of Technology to Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso and the Edict that established the University was appropriately amended. By June 15, 1997 after the tenure of the first Vice-Chancellor, a Sole Administrator in person of Prof. A. M. Salau JP, FNIP a renowned Physicist was appointed. He later became the Acting Vice-Chancellor on July 6, 1999 and substantive Vice Chancellor from May 23, 2000 to June, 2005.

The growth and development of the University was tremendous during the tenure of Prof. A.M. Salawu as the Vice-Chancellor. The principal Officers during his tenure were: Prof. M. A. Osundina (Deputy Vice-Chancellor), Mr. Y. O. Gbadamosi (Ag. Registrar), Mr.T. O. Oyeleye (Bursar), and Mr. G. Adio (Ag. Librarian). On 23rd May, 2005, Professor T. A. Raji became the acting Vice Chancellor until 30th September, 2005. Finally, on October 1st, 2005, Prof. B. B. Adeleke (the current Vice Chancellor) assumed office.

[edit] External links

* Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso

This African university, college or other education institution article is a stub. The name was changed to Ondo State University in 1985 and to its present name of University of Ado-Ekiti in November 1999.

The university hosts one of the most talented professors in Nigeria as Ekiti State is known for its heritage of educated professors.
Contents
[hide]

* 1 Brief History
* 2 Administration
* 3 Contact Officers
* 4 Faculties
* 5 Units
* 6 Halls of Residence
* 7 Miscellaneous
* 8 External links

[edit] Brief History

On January 14, 1981, during the launching of the fourth National Development Plan, late Chief Ajasin announced the intention of the Ondo State government to establish a Multi-Campus University in the state and as a follow up a 16 member planning committee was set up to advise the government on it.

The exercise led to the appointment of Prof. I.O. Oladapo as the First Vice-Chancellor of the University in February 19, 1982 while the composition of the first council headed by the late Chief B.A. Ajaiyi was also announced same day. The council was formally inaugurated at the City Hall , Ado-Ekiti on March 31, 1982 and it was decided that March 30 each year will be observed as the University Founded Day.

The University started off in a modest way from an old catering Rest House in Akure and moved to a temporary site in Ado-Ekiti where lectures started soon after with 136 students spread in the Faculties of Arts, Science and Social Sciences while during the 1983/84 session, new courses where established to strengthen the existing faculties and they were Geology, Biology, Chemistry, French, Yoruba Studies, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Political Science and Psychology.

A fourth Faculty – Faculty of Education was established and the student population increased to 724 in 1983/84 session.

Although the University was conceived as a multi-campus institution, the idea was jettisoned due to the poor financial situation in the state and the country, making the development of the institution to be concentrated in Ado-Ekiti.

In the 1985/86 session, the Faculty of Engineering with three initial Departments of Civil, Mechanical and Electrical and a Department of Banking and Finance while the Faculty of Law was established during the 1991/92 session and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences was established in 2001, bringing the Faculties to eight and the student population of 10,000.

In the last 25years, some of the philanthropists who made significant contributions to the physical development of the University include Dr. Lawrence Omolayo who donated the administrative block consisting of 271 offices, Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), fully furnished 350 seater Lecture Theatre, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu Mustapha, 400 seater Lecture Theatre, Ado-Ekiti Community, administrative block for the Faculty of Law and Major General Adeyinka Adebayo who released 16 Flats at Adebayo Estate for the use of the University since 1984.

The Education Trust Fund (ETF) constructed 1,200–seater, 750–seater Lecture Theatres, new Library Complex, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences office complex, new Faculties of Social Sciences, Arts and Education offices.

A large number of the programmes of the University now enjoy full accreditation while some enjoy interim accreditation. The University has joined the computer age as almost all its academic activities are now done on-line.

A private company has recently established in the University an Information Technology Centre (ITC) with 125 computers and a capacity to increase to 250 and the centre runs for 24hours daily with an uninterrupted power supply.

The council of the University recently set-up an endowment fund for indigent but brilliant student with an initial contribution of N1million pointing out that the problem of indigency has become real in the University because of the poor Economic situation of many parents and the rising cost of University education.

Besides the College of Medicine, there are now eight other faculties: Arts, Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Management Sciences, Engineering, Education, Law, and Social Sciences.

The University has residential and sports facilities for staff and students on Campus.

[edit] Administration

The underlisted are some of the principal members of the University administration:
People Position     Office Holder
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council Chief Akin Omoboriowo
Vice-Chancellor     Israel Olatunji Orubuloye
Deputy Vice-Chancellor     Dipo Kolawole
Registrar     Omowumi Omojola Awosusi
Bursar     Mrs. Florence Modupe Fapohunda
Librarian     Mr. Gabriel Olubunmi Ogunleye

[edit] Contact Officers

Academic Affairs: Deputy Registrar: Mr. E.A. It was founded by Dr Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first president of Nigeria. It is the first indigenous university in Nigeria (citation needed considering that University College Ibadan was established before University of Nigeria).

Noted author Chinua Achebe has held research and teaching appointments at the university since the early 1970s. Astronomer Samuel Ejikeme Okoye founded the Space Research Center in 1972: the SRC remains one of the few institutions in Africa that researches and offers courses in astronomy at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The University has two campuses, in Nsukka (University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN) and in Enugu (University of Nigeria Enugu campus, UNEC). UNEC houses the Faculties of Medicine, Law, Business, Health Sciences and Environmental Studies. UNN houses the Faculties of Agriculture, Arts, Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.

The medical school, in Enugu, has most of it activities in the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), also in Enugu. Here, doctors and other health workers are trained with the highest standards and have proven over the years that they can effect a significant positive change in Africa and indeed the entire worlds' healthcare system. Doctors and indeed nurses trained in the institution are seen all over the world contributing to the advancement of medicine.

The College of Medicine carried out the first open heart surgery in sub-Saharan Africa in 1974 (Not so, Dr christian bernard of South Africa was first; in fact second heart transplant worldwide in 1966, thanks. It has since evolved into the center for cardiothoracic excellence for the West Africa region. A lot of medical research is also being carried out in the college. Most of the projects are nearing completion, but it is pertinent to note that some too, have fallen short of completion due to lack of finances and the Government's reluctance to fund private research.

Of recent a lot of work has emanated from the Department of Pharmacology where a new agent against HIV was derived from a local plant source. Named "irab" the new agent is thought to be a fusion inhibitor and studies in initial clinical trials have shown astouding results.

UNN's current Vice Chancellor is Professor Chinedu O. Nebo (Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering)

Its motto is To Restore the Dignity of Man.

[edit] History

A law to establish a University in the Eastern Region of Nigeria was passed in 1955. While that date marks the formal beginning of the history of the University of Nigeria, the enactment of this legislation was the culmination of many years of thought and discussion by several Nigerian leaders, and inspired particularly by the then Premier of the Eastern Region, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe. One of the first steps taken by the Eastern Nigeria Government towards the implementation of its commitment was an invitation to both the United States of America and the United Kingdom to send advisers to help in the planning of physical and educational aspects of the proposed university.

Under the joint auspices of the Inter-University Council for Higher Education and Overseas and the International Co-operation Administration (now the United States Agency for International Development), J.W. Cook, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, Dr John A. Hannah, President of Michigan State University and Dr Glen L. Taggart, Dean of International Programmes at the same university, came to Nigeria in 1958. The team surveyed the site at Nsukka, and extensively investigated a great variety of factors pertinent to the establishment of a new university. The results of their efforts were contained in a white paper issued by the Eastern Nigeria Government on 30 November 1958. They had recommended "that the development of the University of Nigeria based upon the concept of service to problems and needs of Nigeria, is a desirable project and one that should receive support from any source which could help to make it a sound endeavour".

They further recommended that a provisional council be established to "draw upon the technical and consultative resources available throughout the world for help in planning the institution".

This provisional council, authorized by the Eastern Nigeria Legislature, was appointed by the Governor in Council in April 1959, and given necessary financial and administrative powers to build a sound university.

The provisional council reflected the spirit of international cooperation which has given birth to the institution. It consisted of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chairman, Dr T. Olawale Elias and Dr Okechukwu Ikejiani from the Federation of Nigeria, J.S. Fulton from the United Kingdom, Dr Margueritue Cartwright and Dr Eldon Lee Johnson from the United States of America.

The University was formally opened on 7 October 1960, as the climax to the Nigerian independence celebrations in the Eastern Region. Her Royal Highness, Princess Alexandra of Kent, representing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the Nigerian independence celebrations, performed the opening ceremonies and laid the foundation stone of one of the University's early buildings.

Classes began on 17 October 1960 with an enrollment of 220 students and 13 members of the academic staff. The opening convocation addresses were delivered by the Chairman of the Provisional Council, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of the Federation of Nigeria, and by Dr John A. ILE-IFE 2009/2010 UME ADMISSION LIST

FOR THE ADMISSION INFOMATION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF IFE (OAU) CLICK HERE

The decision to establish the then University of Ife by the ruling Action Group party of the Western Region of Nigeria was in protest to the reccomendations of the Ashby commission . The first Nigerian university was established in 1948 at Ibadan, in the Western region as an external college of the university of London. However, the needs of the country, Nigeria ( then a British colony) far outstriped the manpower productivity of the only university. In particular the University College at Ibadan had no faculty of Engineering or technology, no Law school, no Pharmacy school or management training disciplines. The Ashby commission set up by the erstwhile colonial master, the British was to review tertiary educational needs of the soon to be independent nation of Nigeria. In 1959, the Ashby commission recommended additional ( regional) universities in the Northern, and Eastern regions of Nigeria, and another Federal university in the Lagos protectorate, but none in the more educationally advanced Western Region which also had a 'free and universal primary education' program.The government of the Western region did not want to rely on the Federal universities or those of other regions to admit its populous secondary school leavers. The protest foundation of the university at Ife, was not only in rebuttal to the perceived politicization of higher educational opportunities in Nigeria and the Western region, but also designed to fill the gaps in the projected manpower needs of Nigeria. Ife started the first Facuty of pharmacy in West Africa, the first Department of Chemical Engineering and the first Electronics component in addition to Electrical engineering. Its medical school started with an integrated curriculum and community orientation ( which was later adopted by the World Health Organization) and a compulsory baccalaureat ( BSc honors) before entrance to the clinical school, but this was later jettisoned.
The First Vice-Chancellor of the new university was Professor Oladele Ajose ( MD, PhD)a Glasgow University graduate and Nigeria's first professor of public health recruited from the University of Ibadan. He served from 1962-1966, until political upheavals and military coups led him to be replaced in 1966. The second Vice-Chancllor was Professor HA Oluwasanmi who served from 1966-1975. Graduates of Ife have gone on to excel at the most selective universities internationally, especially in Britain, Europe and America. Many graduates and staff of Ife university hold tenured faculty positions in many American ( USA) universities, including the most selective in different fields. They have also been recipients of a wide array of competitive prizes, awards and distinctions. Ife medical students /alumni have achieved perfect scores in the USMLE examinations, and attained the highest pass rates outside the US in the pharmacy board exams ( referenced needed). Nigeria's only Nobel prize winner ( in literature) Wole Soyinka, served as Professor of Comparative literature at the University of Ife, and is currently an Emeritus Profesor of Dramatic Arts in the university. The motto of the university is " For learning and culture". However, owing to the rigorous and exacting academic standards, students have parodied this motto to "for learning and torture". In terms of research productivity, Ife is consistently ranked as the most productive university in Nigeria by the National Universities Commission ( NUC) and by Shangai University World rankings as it relates to Africa. Ife has consistently attracted the youngest and brightest Nigerian students because for a long time it had no lower age limit for admission. Total enrollment is about 12,000 for undergraduates and 6,000 for graduate studies of different kinds. The major halls of undergraduate residences are for males Fajuyi, Awolowo, and Angola. For women, separate halls of residence exists and are Moremi and Mozambique halls.
